When it comes to teaching the arts…

…it’s all about plurality for me — about crossing over into one another’s disciplines and fields of expertise — about actively nurturing an eclectic, idiosyncratic, pluriform and inclusive frame of reference.

COURSES, WORKSHOPS & INDUSTRY SESSIONS AVAILABLE FOR SHORT- AND LONG-FORM PURPOSES, IN ENGLISH, DUTCH & FRENCH.

Trained as a film director and screenwriter at the renowned M.F.A. Film Program at Columbia University in the City of New York, I have been honing my approach to teaching at Columbia, the Dutch universities of Utrecht and Amsterdam, the American University of Paris, and other institutions; as well as through the project/talent development programs I have helped shape and coordinate at the Binger Filmlab, International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), and the Netherlands Film Festival/Holland Film Meeting.

In my conversations with educators and students in different countries, I have discovered my own particular brand of arts education: heuristic and holistic, inclusive and diverse, critical yet generous. I make it a point for arts students to gain in-depth knowledge and creative skills beyond their own specific direction or specialty; this world needs producers who can write and understand screenplays, directors who are not intimated by financing or scheduling, screenwriters who know what acting feels and sounds like — and overall, filmmakers* who enhance their strength and independence through thorough knowledge of how stories get told, what opportunities can be used to their benefit, and how eventual audiences can be found across the world.

I have developed courses, workshops and industry sessions for multiple purposes, ranging from two-hour one-off sessions to semester-long, curriculum-fitting programs. Feel free to contact me directly to discuss how my particular teaching portfolio could fit with your (program’s) particular needs and wishes.

(*In my book, the term “filmmakers” refers to
directors, screenwriters, ánd producers.)
